Before she was a sober mom of eight living in the suburbs of Seattle, Amy Liz Harrison was a creative dreamer, an Evangelical Christian kid growing up in 1980s Silicon Valley, and someone who had absolutely no idea what was coming next.
Neither did any of us, honestly.
After college, a move back to LA, and a whirlwind marriage to an Australian airline executive just six weeks after meeting him – life took off fast. Too fast. Relocations, four kids, depression, isolation, and a Mommy Wine Club membership that got way out of hand eventually earned her a pair of silver bracelets.
Not Tiffany. Handcuffs.
Two stints in rehab, an ADHD diagnosis, four more biological babies, a Master’s in Publishing, and multiple books later – Amy figured out that her messiest chapters were actually her most important ones.
Now she helps other people figure out the same thing about theirs.

Your dog can’t talk. Your writing has to.
When you’re writing about pets or nature, turn the volume up to medium or medium high. There’s no dialogue to carry the scene, so the description carries everything. If you want the reader to love that animal or feel that landscape, you have to put it on the page.

After three weeks in a courtroom, we needed a book.

I found my first book this morning. It’s called “The Idiot Hall of Fame.”
Paperback edition, obviously. Five of the most idiotic idiots inside. Closing line: “No idiots were harmed.”
Here’s the tip hiding in there. If you’re hunting for your writer’s voice, look back at what you loved writing when you were younger. Research papers? Freeform in English class? Making people laugh? That’s your voice. It’s been with you the whole time.

Like the reader is 5. Not in your tone, and never in a making-fun-of-people way. This is about clarity. If a step can be misread, it will be.
Break it down. Keep your voice in it. Enjoy the fact that you get to teach somebody something new.

Put a folder on your desk. A digital one. Every old version goes in there, the same way you’d toss paper drafts into a manila folder.
Then make a second folder called Current Version. Current manuscript, current cover, all the things you’re working on right now. Nothing else gets in.

If fear of getting something wrong is keeping you off the page, here’s my take: don’t worry about it. Language bends constantly now. New words, new spellings, “kween” with a K. The rules got broken a long time ago, and readers kept reading.
Go for it anyway. Get the story down. Editing comes later.

My best tip on prescribing advice in your book: don’t.
We don’t know what’s good for somebody else. Telling readers to quit their medication, leave their marriage or go no-contact with a parent is dangerous ground, and it isn’t yours to stand on.
Your story is. Share what happened to you and what you did about it. Readers are smart enough to take what fits.

Her defense attorney went back into the house after police were done and found five empty pill bottles in her nightstand. The state never collected them. Then the prosecution suggested she was not taking her meds.
Her journals were read in court. One line on direct. On cross, the rest: sleep training, breastfeeding guilt, going back to work. Those are not the journals of someone who is plotting. I have written those pages.
Mental health has nothing to do with whether you are a good person or a bad person.

Your memoir has more than one human in it. Write like it.
I’m never going to speak for somebody else. But I can share my perception of how my process affected the people around me. We don’t live in silos. Our thoughts and choices land on other people, and showing that on the page is what makes a reader lean in.
Humanize the people in your story. It gets better every time.

Amy Liz Harrison has been watching a court case.
And the level of restraint required in that room — the careful wording, the objections, the sustained and overruled and your honor this and your honor that — would make her completely lose her mind.
